VARSITY TAKES FIRST WIN

Last Saturday, six of the starting varsity baseball players were dressed in shorts and playing basketball in the finals of the Northwest Regional.   They were back on their feet by Monday ( a scramble finding all the baseball stuff they haven't looked at since last summer) and played their first game against East Lawrence.  The Red Devils lost that game but they shook some of the rust off and hit surprising well.


Elkmont took the field again last night when the Falkville Eagles came to town.  The Red Devils were up 8-1 when several of the starters went to the bench.  New players took the field, Falkville took advantage of the transition by scoring three runs before Elkmont regrouped.  Jared Bailey put the icing on the cake when he hit a grand slam to end the game, 17 - 4 (run rule in sixth inning).


HIGHLIGHTS:

• defense looked good - a big positive for this year's team
• hit the ball well - another strong point; Jared Bailey(grandslam) and Cole Glass (3 hits)  
• several pitchers got valuable time on the mound - seasoned, developed pitchers are not a strength for the Red Devils.  This is a weakness that hopefully will resolve itself with more experience.  These early games will give the young pitching staff a change to work against varsity hitters before Area play starts later in March.
• Improved baseball atmosphere - press box music and announcer gives Elkmont's varsity games extra polish.  Announcer Mickey Glass is going a great job.  The music selected for each Red Devil batter brings a smile.

SATURDAY GAMES CANCELLED

Due to the Elkmont Basketball Red Devils win on Thursday, they are in the finals of the Northwest Region on Saturday. 

The baseball games scheduled for Saturday are cancelled to allow everyone to support the basketball team.

BREWER TAKES TWO

Both the Varsity and JV Red Devils took a loss in the season opening.  With the seniors still playing basketball, several youngsters saw their first varsity pitches.  They took it on the nose yesterday but that experience will help them later in the season.

GAMES ON

Coach Holt and his players have worked hard to get the field ready for today.  With rakes, wind and sun later today and the marvelous invention of the sump pump, the field has changed from a pond to a baseball field.  Varsity game is at 4:15 pm and the JV will follow.  GO RED DEVILS...

SEASON OPENING DAY IN QUESTION

The field got a lot of rain last night and much of infield is underwater.  Coach Holt is trying to get the field ready but it is very iffy.  Will know status of Varsity and JV games tomorrow by 3 pm.  Be sure to check back occasionally tomorrow to find out.

REMINDER

Chicken Stew money is due ASAP.  Each player needs to sell at least $175 of stew to support the program.  It isn't too late to order stew.  Contact Heather Hobbs to place your order.   HEATHER HOBBS


If you don't want to bother with the fundraiser, Coach Holt would love donations of $175 to the baseball program.  Many parents prefer this option.  Make your check out to EHS Baseball. 

WORK DAY / CHICKEN STEW

First varsity baseball game is Monday.  The work day has been rescheduled for this Saturday @ 10 am.  With no time left before the season starts, parents and players need to turn out to be able to get everything done.  There is something for everyone do.

Thoughts from Coach Holt:

• I cannot and will not guarantee playing time.  I can only promise to be fair when considering your talent and how much you play.  Playing time will be based upon attitude, effort, ability and attendance.
• You will need to have a pair of black cleats and black sleeves for this season (long sleeved shirt to wear under uniform such as UnderArmour or Nike, etc.)
• The program will continue to buy many things to help provide the nicest and best for our baseball program.  Because of this, I need you to sell at least $175 worth of chicken stew.  This is our only fundraiser and it is important to the financial well-being of our baseball program.  
• Please sign up to work the chicken stew on February 18.  Once again, this is important to our program and we need workers to make this a success.  Go to fundraiser tab for more information    Chairwoman:  Heather Hobbs 
• I have given you an order sheet if you want to order any items at this time.  I plan on calling in the first order on Friday.  Please visit our team store page on this blog for items and prices.
• I need to create a list of emails and phone numbers so I can have a way to contact parents and players during the season.  Send your information in as soon as possible: COACH HOLT
• There will be a workday this Saturday, February 11, to make final preparations for the season.  Please come around 10 a.m. and dress warmly.  It is supposed to be sunny but cool.
